People buy items to meet their necessities. However, this consumption pattern is usual in the global economy. Then there’s exists the question of what causes Consumerism?
Everyone desires to live a pleasant life. Nothing is wrong with that. Everything within a limit is acceptable for both individuals and the economy. Thus, Spending that is beyond our control creates a problem.
Let’s try to understand the entire scenario in layman’s terms.
How Globalization Affects Consumerism?
Causes of Consumerism:
1. Overconsumption:
People often buy items that they don’t need. Possibly, they find happiness in the world around them and their possessions. To them, buying more stuff makes them happy.
They are unaware of the fact that overconsumption doesn’t benefit their pocket. Moreover, Will they ever use the stuff they bought?
2. Competitive lifestyle:
If my neighbor has something, why shouldn’t I have? It is the natural mental construct of a person. People try to collect everything they can to compete. As a result, they end up purchasing useless goods and services.
Having more products in the house reflects the family’s status. It serves as society’s so-called status norm.
3. The Feeling of isolation:
We all experience loneliness, sadness, and boredom at times. When these emotions hit, most people tend to go shopping. As a result, we frequently purchase unnecessary items to satisfy our moods and emotions.
Unless it creates any trouble for us, we must know how to handle it.
4. Effective marketing strategy:
Nowadays, the company makes advertisements for products that they can attract their customers. Through effective marketing strategy, they compel the market to create demand. They keep their prices low to compete.
The majority of customers lose their conscience. Finally, they spend their money on useless things.
5. Availability of goods/Having too many choices:
Since people have money in their hands, they want to spend it somewhere. The market has an abundance of choices more than what one needs.
Again, this makes the market more competitive. Hence, the cycle goes on.
6. Materialistic possession:
Generally, wealth and possessions are considered determinants of success in society. We eventually feel worthless if we don’t have these things. These are the symbols of luxury life.
7. Overdependence on technology:
Furthermore, one of the reasons for rising consumerism is a desire for new and improved technology. Technology has become a fundamental part of our lives, allowing us to live comfortably. It causes people to become technologically addicted. As a result, they desired frequently updated gadgets.
8. Fashion Trend:
Fashion is volatile. Spending more money will keep us up to date with the ongoing trend. Therefore, it’s just another reason for people to buy unnecessary things.
9. Standard of Living:
Our society demands a healthy standard of living. However, this phrase does not have an accurate definition. Consumers misinterpret this as getting pricey items to retain status. It raises the issue of consumerism.
10. Being Shopaholic:
A shopaholic loves to shop a lot. However, they might not need the things that they are purchasing. Eliminating those reasons of consumerism is Conscious consumerism.
